The Celebrity “Roast” is the oldest comedic event in the world offering uproarious entertainment for almost a century created and fostered by the Friars. The Roast, which features the legends of the entertainment world firing their best barbs at a Guest of Honor, is the most imitated entertainment event. Wildly cutting-edge and remarkably witty, this unique event is a no-holds barred comedy sensation in which “Roasters” don’t just cross lines, they bulldoze through them for optimum laughs targeted to reduce the guest of honor and audience to tears–of laughter.
Such legends as Humphrey Bogart, Milton Berle, Johnny Carson, Lucille Ball, Sid Caesar, and Jerry Lewis have been skewered along with high profile celebrities such as Bruce Willis, Chevy Chase, Richard Pryor, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Kelsey Grammer, Hugh Hefner, Donald Trump and Matt Lauer. It is the Friars motto of “We always Roast the ones we love!” that has endeared these honorees to the Friars.
Since the Friars Club’s inception in 1904 the members have always lavished praise upon their entertainment peers through elegant dinners consisting of engaging testimonials. An opportunity for the Friars to show appreciation to their brethren in the arts and humanities they select a guest of honor and invite their friends and celebrity fans to honor them in an evening of splendor–and of course–entertainment.
From George M. Cohan and Irving Berlin down through the years the greatest of the greats have shared this esteemed accolade–Jack Benny, George Jessel, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Carol Burnett, Elizabeth Taylor, Dr. Henry Kissinger, Walter Cronkite, Kirk Douglas, Neil Simon, Barbara Walters, John Travolta and Kelly Preston among others have been saluted by their fellow Friars. It is an honor steeped in tradition and carries a legacy laden with entertainment nobility. |
